Electric Bees

The voltage gradient between earth and air
bestows a negative charge on flowers
beckons beyond perfume or color
radiates waves of attraction.
Bees buzz with a positive charge
fine hairs on black and yellow bodies
bend to electromagnetic forces,
intensify the pull to blooms of nectar.
As they alight, static draws pollen
from stamen to fur and it sticks
like dust to a microfiber cloth
—electrons are always fickle friends.
The weeping willow droop of boughs
under my little cotoneaster tree
are the ribs of an old birdcage
encasing a murmur of bees and me.
